Workshop: Iterative Game Jam Design (How to prepare for a Game Jam)
Under the expert guide of Niels Keetels and Valentijn Muijres, two game designers and educators who have been involved in many game jams in the Netherlands and around the world, workshop members were invited to delve into the fun and challenging world of game jam organisers.
Four groups were made and given the opportunity to organise their own fictitious applied game jam where the roll of a die could mean the difference between having the right participants or being left with shady sponsors. Niels and Valentijn were the able game masters: What could possibly go wrong? No food, sponsors with shady backgrounds, a space that seems perfect but then you hear that internet can only be included after an extra wad of cash is given. The tricky going-ons of running a game jam were aptly illustrated by this game which is still in its prototype phase. Players were able to feel the joys and frustrations of organising such an event and provided with many hands-on examples based on real-life experiences of the game masters. What could possibly go wrong indeed.
